Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Kua Number? +
A Kua Number (命卦数) is a number from 1 to 9 calculated from your birth year and gender in feng shui. It determines your personal auspicious and inauspicious directions based on the Eight Mansions (Ba Zhai) system.
How is the Kua Number calculated? +
Take the last two digits of your birth year and add them to a single digit. For males born before 2000, subtract from 11; for males born 2000+, subtract from 9. For females born before 2000, add 4; for females born 2000+, add 6. If the result is 10, use 1. If the result is 5, males use 2 and females use 8.
Why does my birth month and day matter? +
In feng shui, the year changes at Lichun (Start of Spring, around February 3-5), not January 1st. If you were born between January 1st and Lichun, your Kua Number is calculated using the previous year. Always provide your full birth date for the most accurate result.
What are East and West life groups? +
Kua numbers 1, 3, 4, and 9 belong to the East group (Water, Wood, Fire elements). Kua numbers 2, 6, 7, and 8 belong to the West group (Earth, Metal elements). Each group shares four auspicious directions.
How do I use my Kua Number? +
Use your auspicious directions for important orientations: bed placement (head pointing to a good direction), desk/work direction, stove placement, and main door direction. Avoid inauspicious directions for these key positions.
